Valencia bids Fallas farewell and gets ready for the America’s Cup
19th March was an exciting night for the city of Valencia. Five days and nights of festivities were brought to a grand finale with the burning of over 700 monuments – the magnificent “fallas” sculptures made of cardboard, stone, wood and cork, some measuring up to 30 metres tall and representing over 600 000€ of investment.
Over a million people visited the city, and thousands have been to Port America’s Cup to catch their first glimpse of the increasing action around the America’s Cup, where racing begins in just two weeks.
2007 is the decisive season of America’s Cup racing in Valencia and practically all the Fallas monuments reflected it in some shape or form. These enormous ephemeral works of art and colour are a humorous satire of the most relevant events in Valencian society, and the oldest sporting trophy in the world was naturally one of the protagonists.
